National day
The national day of Uganda is 9 October (Independence Day). The MEA brief of April 2026 states that India's freedom struggle inspired the early Ugandan activists to fight colonisation, and that Uganda eventually achieved freedom in 1962.
The brief records that H.E. John Mulimba, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, visited India and attended a reception on 28 November 2025 hosted by the Uganda High Commission in New Delhi. The reception celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the establishment of Uganda-India Diplomatic Relations, in conjunction with Uganda's 63rd Independence Day.
Visas
The only visa arrangement recorded in the brief is the MoU on exemption from visa requirement for holders of official and diplomatic passports, one of the agreements signed during Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's visit to Uganda in July 2018.
The brief contains no information on visas or e-visas for holders of ordinary passports travelling in either direction. Indian travellers going to Uganda should check current requirements with the Uganda High Commission in New Delhi. Ugandan nationals planning to travel to India should confirm current requirements through official Indian government channels.
Ugandan students and trainees in India
According to the MEA brief of April 2026, an estimated 1200 Ugandan students are presently studying in Indian universities. The brief also states that 200 plus slots have been allotted to Ugandan nationals for short-term and medium-term courses at civilian and Defence Institutes under various ITEC programmes of the Ministry of External Affairs. Ugandan students and trainees in India with consular questions should direct them to the High Commission in New Delhi.
To promote Indian higher education in Uganda, a "Study-in-India" team of around 25 members from Education Consultants India Limited (EdCIL), with representatives of 11 key universities in India, visited Kampala from 02 May 2024. The main purpose of the visit was to hold an Educational Fair in Kampala on 02 May 2024.
Medical treatment in India
The brief records that the Indian community in Uganda donates a share of the proceeds from its events to social causes, and that these include sponsoring heart surgeries of Ugandan children in India.
Air connectivity
The brief gives no information on flights or air services between India and Uganda. Travellers should check current routes directly with airlines.
Limits of honorary consulates
Honorary consuls have limited powers and may not offer the full range of services available at the High Commission. Anyone with a visa, passport, travel document or other consular matter should confirm the current requirements and procedure directly with the Uganda High Commission in New Delhi.
