Migration and mobility
According to the MEA brief of July 2026, migration between India and the UK is governed by the Migration and Mobility Partnership (MMP) Agreement signed on 4 May 2021. The agreement is intended to address illegal immigration as well as to allow swifter movement of working professionals between the two countries, which the brief calls an important element of the India-UK economic partnership.
Under the Young Professional Scheme, announced in 2022, 3000 visas are provided every year to graduates between the ages of 18-30. The visas allow holders to live and work in each other's country for 2 years. The brief states that efforts are underway to popularise the scheme among young professionals on both sides.
The brief does not set out eligibility conditions, fees or application procedures for this scheme or for other UK visas. Applicants should check current requirements with the High Commission or its official website before applying.
Studying in the UK and UK universities in India
The brief describes the UK as one of the most preferred destinations for higher studies among Indian students. India and the UK signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the mutual recognition of academic qualifications on 21 July 2022.
Several UK universities have been allowed to open campuses in India, to help realise the goal of the New Education Policy (NEP) to make quality education accessible to all. The University Grants Commission (UGC) and the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA), Gift City, have granted approvals to:
- Southampton University, in Gurugram
- Queen's University, Belfast, the University of Surrey and Coventry University, at GIFT City, Gujarat
- the University of Liverpool and the University of Lancaster, at Bengaluru
- the University of Bristol, the University of York and the University of Aberdeen, at Mumbai
The Indian community in the UK
As per the 2021 Census cited in the brief, the UK has an Indian diaspora of 1.864 million. This is about 2.6% of the UK's total population, which the brief puts at an estimated 68 million in 2022. According to the census, 3,69,000 persons in the UK hold Indian passports.
The brief notes the diaspora's high rates of employment and professional qualifications. It records contributions by the Indian diaspora in academia, literature, arts, medicine, science, sports, industry, business and politics.
Honorary consuls and confirming requirements
The United Kingdom is represented in India by its High Commission in New Delhi and by its consulates; the register lists no honorary consuls. Where a country appoints honorary consuls, they have limited powers and do not provide the full range of services of a High Commission. Visa, document and other requirements should always be confirmed directly with the High Commission.
