Connectivity and travel links
According to the MEA brief of June 2026, connectivity has emerged as the main focus area of bilateral ties. The brief lists maritime connectivity, air connectivity, energy and power connectivity, trade, economic and financial connectivity, digital connectivity and people-to-people connectivity. The passenger links it records are:
- a ferry service between Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu, and Kankesanthurai, Sri Lanka, which commenced in October 2023; India has extended financial assistance for another year to support the ongoing service
- an air link between Chennai and Jaffna, resumed in December 2022
- an air link between Tiruchirapalli and Jaffna, resumed in March 2025
To develop Kankesanthurai port, the Government of India has extended a grant of USD 65 million to the Government of Sri Lanka, and an MoU to formalise the arrangement is under negotiation. In parallel, discussions are ongoing to start ferry services between Rameswaram (Tamil Nadu) and Talaimannar, which the brief says would require upgradation of infrastructure at the respective ports. The brief does not give schedules, operators or fares for these services.
Other connectivity initiatives under discussion, according to the brief, are:
- an Economic Land Corridor, for developing land access to Trincomalee and Colombo
- a multi-product pipeline connecting India and Sri Lanka
- power grid interconnection
Tourism
The brief calls tourism another important component of the relationship. India was the leading tourist source market for Sri Lanka in 2025, with around 5.31 lakh arrivals, or 22.5% of Sri Lanka's tourist traffic.
Digital payments
UPI QR based payments were launched in Sri Lanka in February 2024. PM Modi and then President Ranil Wickremesinghe launched them virtually, by video conference.
OCI eligibility for Indian Origin Tamils
The brief states that during the Vice President's visit to Sri Lanka in April 2026, the Government of India extended eligibility for the OCI card to 5th and 6th generation Indian Origin Tamils (IOTs). Questions about OCI eligibility and applications should be taken up through official Government of India channels.
Visas
The brief does not set out visa, e-visa or entry requirements for travel to Sri Lanka. Travellers, students and business visitors should check current requirements with the High Commission or with the consulate serving their area before making plans.
Honorary consuls
Honorary consuls have limited powers and do not provide the full range of services offered by a high commission or a career consulate. Visa, passport and other consular requirements should be confirmed with the High Commission of Sri Lanka in New Delhi or with the consulates in Chennai and Mumbai, including by readers close to Thiruvananthapuram.
