India's missions in South Africa

For Indian nationals in South Africa, the brief describes the following Indian offices:

  • The High Commission of India in Pretoria, opened in May 1994.
  • The Consulate General of India in Johannesburg, established after diplomatic and consular relations were agreed in November 1993.
  • The Consulate General of India in Durban, opened in May 1994.
  • The Consulate General of India in Cape Town. Because the South African Parliament meets in Cape Town, a permanent office of the High Commission was opened there in 1996, and it was re-designated as a Consulate General with effect from January 2011.

Consular cooperation

The 2nd India-South Africa Joint Immigration and Consular Working Group Meeting was held at the Department of Home Affairs in Pretoria on 22 and 23 May 2025. The Indian team was headed by Dr. Binoy George, JS (CPV), Ministry of External Affairs, and the South African team by Mr. Phindiwe Mbhele, Director (Corporate Accounts Unit, Immigration Services), Department of Home Affairs. The meeting discussed issues relating to visas, immigration, consular matters, extradition cases and MLAT requests. The brief does not report specific outcomes or rule changes arising from the meeting, so it should not be read as a guide to current visa practice.

OCI facility for persons of Indian origin

The brief states that on 28 October 2025 the Ministry granted the OCI facility for up to seventh generation PIOs in South Africa. People of Indian origin in South Africa who wish to use this facility should confirm the current eligibility rules and procedure with the Indian missions in South Africa or other official Indian government channels.

Visas and travel

The brief does not set out visa requirements, fees or processing times for travel between India and South Africa, and it does not give information on air connectivity. Travellers should check current visa requirements with the South African High Commission in New Delhi, or with the consulate in Mumbai, before making plans.

Using these details

Addresses, telephone numbers, office holders and consular arrangements can change after the date on which the register was read. The national day is taken from the UN Protocol and Liaison Service Blue Book. Readers should confirm the details above with the High Commission, for example through its website, before visiting or sending documents.

Honorary consuls

Honorary consuls have limited powers and do not offer the full range of services provided by the High Commission or a career consulate. Visa, passport and other consular requirements should always be confirmed with the High Commission of the Republic of South Africa in New Delhi or its consulate in Mumbai.
