This article covers trade between India and Seychelles, the goods traded, Indian companies and investment in Seychelles, business links and economic agreements, and cooperation on energy and the environment. It draws on the MEA bilateral brief of June 2026, and all figures are as of that brief.
Trade figures
According to the MEA brief of June 2026, bilateral trade and commerce with Seychelles is "rather modest", mostly because there is no direct shipping line between India and Seychelles.
In 2023-24, India exported goods worth USD 76.19 million to Seychelles and imported goods worth USD 8.69 million from Seychelles. The brief records an increase of 14.96% in total trade in 2023-24 compared with 2022-23.
For 2024-25, the brief states that bilateral trade remained steady, with total trade of USD 72.92 million in the period from April 2024 to February 2025. Of this, exports from India amounted to USD 68.64 million and imports to India to USD 4.28 million. The brief does not give a figure for the full year 2024-25.
Main items traded
The brief lists Seychelles' main items of import from India as:
- rice
- miscellaneous food products
- cement
- linen and cotton
- vehicles and associated transport equipment
- medicines
- instruments and appliances for medical, surgical and dental use
Indian companies in Seychelles
The brief states that several Indian companies are present in Seychelles. Bank of Baroda has maintained an overseas branch in Victoria since 1978.
In the private sector, M/s Bharti Airtel Telecom group has invested over US$ 25 million since 1998 in setting up the Airtel mobile telephone and internet services in Seychelles. TATA has supplied most of the fleet of buses that ply in Mahé and Praslin, and the brief names Ashok Leyland as a new entrant.
Business links and economic agreements
The earlier bilateral agreements listed in the brief include a Trade Agreement (2000), a Joint Business Council (2000) and a Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (BIPPA), signed in June 2010. The brief also records that the Tax Information Exchange Agreement (TIEA) was signed during the Presidential visit to India in August 2015.
During President Dr. Patrick Herminie's State Visit to India in February 2026, he took part in a business event curated by FICCI and attended a business event hosted by CII in Mumbai.
Energy and environment
The brief states that the two countries have been supportive of each other's position in international fora on issues related to climate change. It places the Blue Economy Protocol signed in August 2015 within this area of cooperation.
With the ratification of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Framework Agreement in September 2017, Seychelles officially became one of the Founding Members of ISA. Under the MOU on Renewable Energy Cooperation signed during the Prime Minister's visit in March 2015, a 3-member delegation from Seychelles attended the first meeting of the Joint Working Group in New Delhi in February 2016 to chart out the roadmap of cooperation.
On the sidelines of COP27 in November 2022, Seychelles signed an agreement with the ISA for a project to set up a 5 metric tonnes solar-powered cold storage on Praslin Island. The facility was inaugurated during Minister Flavien Joubert's visit to New Delhi in October-November 2023 and commissioned in October 2024. The brief adds that 03 further ISA projects, a solar rooftop, a solar pump and a solar chiller, are planned in Seychelles under the Quad-Climate initiative.
