How the embassy was established
According to the MEA brief of June 2026, the Government of Macedonia appointed an Indian businessman in New Delhi as its Honorary Consul in 2006. It then opened a full-fledged Embassy in New Delhi under its constitutional name, "Republic of Macedonia", in October 2008. Foreign Minister Antonio Milososki officially opened the Macedonian Embassy during his visit to India in January 2009.
The country's name in official use
According to the brief, the country's name was the subject of a long-standing dispute with Greece. Because the Macedonian side insisted on the use of "Republic of Macedonia" instead of the provisional name FYROM, the Government of India decided in August 2001 that this name could be used in bilateral communications, while FYROM would continue to be used in multilateral fora. Following the Prespa Agreement with Greece, the country has been named the Republic of North Macedonia with effect from 14 February 2019.
Honorary consulates
The register lists honorary consulates of North Macedonia in:
- Bengaluru
- Chennai
- Kolkata
- Mumbai
The brief records that the Macedonian government appointed an Honorary Consul in Kolkata in 2009 as a follow-up of the Foreign Minister's visit, and subsequently appointed Honorary Consuls in Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore.
India's representation in North Macedonia
The brief states that the Indian Embassy in Bulgaria is concurrently accredited to North Macedonia. The Government of India appointed an Honorary Consul to Macedonia in 2008, but as of June 2026 the brief records that the post is lying vacant.
National day
The national day of North Macedonia is 8 September (Independence Day).
Visas and travel
An Agreement for abolition of visa regime in respect of diplomatic passport holders of both countries was signed during the Foreign Minister's visit in January 2009, and an amendment to include official passports is still being negotiated.
The brief notes that North Macedonia has tightened its visa policy for non-EU nationals, which has created some difficulties for Indian travellers. It also states that North Macedonia faces the problem of being a transit country for illegal immigrants coming from Serbia and trying to enter Greece, and that several Indian nationals have been detained in North Macedonia in recent years for illegal entry.
With North Macedonia becoming increasingly integrated with the EU, India has proposed a Migration and mobility agreement. North Macedonia has indicated that it would like to wait until the EU completes its screening process as part of the accession process.
In the other direction, the brief records that in 2024, 440 visas were issued to North Macedonian citizens, including business, medical, tourist and conference/seminar visas. The brief sets out no visa fees, processing times or eligibility rules for travellers, so current requirements should be checked with the Embassy of North Macedonia in New Delhi.
Honorary consuls
Honorary consuls have limited powers, and the services available at the honorary consulates in Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai may be narrower than those of the embassy. Visa, document and other consular requirements should always be confirmed directly with the Embassy of North Macedonia in New Delhi.
