- Chennai
- Kolkata
National day
The UN Protocol and Liaison Service Blue Book lists the national day of New Zealand as 6 February (Waitangi Day).
Visas and the mobility of professionals
The brief contains no information on visa requirements, fees or procedures for travel to New Zealand. It does record several developments on the mobility of people between the two countries:
- During Prime Minister Luxon's visit to India in March 2025, the two leaders announced the launch of negotiations on an arrangement facilitating the mobility of professionals and skilled workers.
- The New Zealand cross-party political delegation that accompanied Trade Minister Todd McClay to India in April 2026 discussed visa pathways for skilled professionals with Indian government representatives and policy-makers.
- As of July 2026, the brief states that Indian students are facing difficulties in obtaining suitable post study work visas.
Students, workers, business travellers and tourists should check current visa requirements with the New Zealand High Commission or the official New Zealand government website before applying.
Air connectivity
Direct air connectivity was among the issues discussed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins when they met on 22 May 2023 on the sidelines of the FIPIC-III Summit in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The brief gives no information on current flight routes between the two countries.
India's missions in New Zealand
The brief is issued by the High Commission of India in Wellington. During her State Visit to New Zealand in August 2024, President Smt. Droupadi Murmu announced the opening of an Indian Consulate in Auckland, which became operational from September 5, 2024.
Safety of Indian-run businesses in New Zealand
The brief notes a concern about high retail crime. A number of Indians own small retail businesses in New Zealand or work in them, and in the last few years there have been instances of ram-raids on dairies owned by Indians and attacks on Indians working in dairies. The brief also records that a robbery at a jewellery store in Auckland resulted in serious injuries to a member of the Indian diaspora.
Honorary consuls and confirming requirements
Honorary consuls have limited powers, and the honorary consulates in Chennai and Kolkata do not offer the full range of services available at the High Commission. Visa, document and other consular requirements should always be confirmed directly with the New Zealand High Commission in New Delhi or the consulate in Mumbai, using the contact details above.
