This article covers the historical contacts between India and Morocco, the establishment of diplomatic relations, high-level and ministerial visits and the institutional mechanisms between the two governments. It is based on the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) bilateral brief on India-Morocco relations dated April 2026.

Historical contacts and recognition

According to the MEA brief of April 2026, contacts between India and the Kingdom of Morocco go back to the 14th century, when the traveller and writer Ibn Batuta, from Tangier, travelled to India. In modern times, India was active in the UN in support of the Moroccan freedom movement.

India recognised Morocco as an independent and sovereign country on 20 June 1956, immediately after it gained its independence. Diplomatic relations were established in 1957. The brief states that the two countries have since developed strong friendly relations and active, mutually beneficial cooperation based on shared values and respect for each other's sensitivities.

Visits by heads of state and government

Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee visited Morocco in February 1999, the first ever Prime Ministerial visit to Morocco, which the brief describes as a landmark visit. It was followed by the visit of Moroccan Prime Minister Mr. Abderrehman Youssoufi to India in February 2000.

After ascending the throne, His Majesty King Mohammed VI chose India for his first visit to an Asian country, in 2001. This was also his first official visit to India as King. In October 2015 he led the Moroccan delegation to the 3rd India Africa Forum Summit (IAFS-III) in New Delhi, and met Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on its sidelines on 29 October 2015.

The brief states that this meeting led to high momentum in joint activities and bilateral cooperation. It says this is reflected in around 30 Ministerial visits and interactions since October 2015, and in the signing of more than 40 MoUs and Agreements in areas including defence, counter-terrorism, cyber security, space, agriculture and vocational training.
