This article gives the contact details of the Embassy of Japan in New Delhi, the Indian cities where Japan has consulates or an honorary consulate, and the points in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) bilateral brief of June 2026 that are relevant to people planning to work, train or travel in Japan. Contact details, the head of mission and the list of consular offices come from the MEA Protocol Division register, read on 24 September 2026.

Embassy of Japan in New Delhi

According to the register, the head of mission is H.E. Mr. Keiichi Ono, Ambassador.

Consulates and honorary consulate

The register lists consulates of Japan in four Indian cities:

  • Bengaluru
  • Chennai
  • Kolkata
  • Mumbai

It also lists an honorary consulate of Japan in Ahmedabad. The addresses and telephone numbers that the MEA register lists for these offices are shown on the Japan country page on Diplo.

National day

The national day of Japan is 23 February (Birthday of the Emperor).

Visas and travel

During PM Kishida's visit to India in March 2023, the two sides announced 2023 as the "India-Japan Year of Tourism Exchange", with the theme "Connecting Himalayas with Mount Fuji". The theme year was later extended to 2024.

The MEA brief of June 2026 does not set out visa, e-visa or entry requirements for Japan, and it gives no information on flights between the two countries. Travellers, students and business visitors should check current requirements with the Embassy of Japan or the consulate serving their area before making plans.

Working and training in Japan

The brief records several arrangements relevant to Indians seeking skills training or work in Japan:

  • Under an India-Japan Memorandum of Cooperation signed in 2016, Japanese companies have established the Japan-India Institute of Manufacturing (JIM) in India and Japanese Endowed Courses (JEC) in Indian engineering colleges.
  • India and Japan cooperate under Japan's Technical Intern Training Programme (TITP) and Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) initiative, which send Indian interns and blue collar workers to Japan on a short-term basis in select sectors.
  • The Action Plan for India - Japan Human Resource Exchange agreed at the 2025 Annual Summit includes a two-way exchange of 500,000 people between India and Japan, and in particular 50,000 skilled and semi-skilled personnel from India to Japan, in the next five years.

According to the MEA brief of June 2026, human resource exchange to strengthen people-to-people links between India and Japan is an important priority for bilateral ties. India's Secretary (Labour) visited Tokyo in May 2026 to attend a seminar on workforce mobility cooperation between India and Japan, and Secretary (Textiles) visited Japan in June 2026.

The brief does not describe the eligibility conditions or application procedures for these schemes. Readers interested in them should seek current information from the Embassy of Japan and from official Government of India channels.

India's mission in Japan

The brief refers to the Embassy of India, Tokyo, including in connection with business events it co-hosts. Indian nationals in Japan who need consular help from their own government should approach that Embassy, whose contact details should be taken from official Government of India sources.

Honorary consuls

Honorary consuls have limited powers and do not provide the full range of services offered by an embassy or a career consulate. Visa, passport and other consular requirements should be confirmed with the Embassy of Japan in New Delhi or with the consulate that serves the reader's area, even for readers close to Ahmedabad.
