This article covers India's development partnership with Fiji, cooperation in health, digital solutions and defence, and the trade and business figures in the MEA bilateral brief of June 2026. The brief's trade material is short, so it is included here with the other economic facts. Figures are given as the brief states them, for the periods it names.
Development partnership
According to the MEA brief of June 2026, India, as a major development partner of Fiji, has supported Fiji in its nation building efforts across key sectors and in the area of capacity building. The brief describes development cooperation as a key pillar of India's partnership with Fiji, in areas such as agriculture, capacity building, education, health, IT, MSMEs, clean energy, and HADR.
The brief lists the following grant assistance:
- Solar power. Under the US$1.31 million regional Solarisation Project (2020), largely funded by India and implemented in partnership with the UN and the Pacific Islands Development Forum (PIDF), photovoltaic systems were installed at Fiji's State House, the Great Council of Chiefs Meeting Hall, the Kubuna Paramount Chief's residence and the Prime Minister's official residence. The brief states that this boosted climate resilience.
- India-UN Development Partnership Fund. Through the fund, India supports climate resilience and parametric insurance, and assists Fiji's sugar industry and youth farming initiatives.
- Supplies and community projects. India has provided Fiji with medical supplies, vehicles, soil testing labs, children's medicines, ARV drugs and agricultural seeds, and has delivered community projects such as Jaipur Foot camps.
- Education and research. India established the Mahatma Gandhi Centre of Excellence in IT (2021) at Fiji National University and is helping set up the Sustainable Coastal and Ocean Research Institute (SCORI) at the University of South Pacific.
- Elections. India has provided vehicles and indelible ink for Fiji's elections since 2014.
Disaster relief
The brief describes India as an early responder. India extended HADR support, notably after Cyclone Winston (2016) and Cyclone Yasa (2020), and supplied 100,000 Covishield vaccines to Fiji in 2021.
Health cooperation
According to the brief, an Agreement on Healthcare Cooperation (2005) continues to guide engagement between the two countries in health.
On 9 May 2025, the Government of India and the Government of Fiji signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Pharmacopoeial Cooperation. It establishes a framework for the recognition of the Indian Pharmacopoeia as a pharmacopoeial standard for assessing applications for market authorisation for medicinal products manufactured in India.
Digital cooperation
On 12 Nov 2024, India and Fiji signed an MoU aimed at advancing digital transformation through the exchange of successful, population-scale digital solutions.
Defence cooperation
An MOU on Defence Cooperation was signed in 2017. The Defence Minister of Fiji visited India in February 2025 to participate in AERO India 2025, and the two Defence Ministers held a bilateral meeting during the visit. The first Joint Working Group meeting on Defence took place in Fiji on 18 July 2025.
Indian naval ships have also called at Suva. INS Satpura made a goodwill visit in Sept 2022, and INS Kadmatt paid a goodwill visit in September 2025.
