This article gives the contact details of the High Commission for Australia in New Delhi and the Indian cities where Australia has consulates, with the national day and the mobility, consular and legal arrangements described in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) bilateral brief of June 2026. Contact details, the head of mission and the list of consulate cities come from the MEA Protocol Division register, read on 24 September 2026.

High Commission for Australia, New Delhi

According to the register, the head of mission is H.E. Mr. Philip Green, High Commissioner. The MEA brief notes that Australia appointed its first High Commissioner to India in 1944.

Consulates in India

The register lists consulates of Australia in the following Indian cities:

  • Bengaluru
  • Chennai
  • Kolkata
  • Mumbai

The register lists no honorary consulates of Australia in India, and it gives no separate addresses or telephone numbers for the consulates. The High Commission can provide these.

National day

Australia's national day is 26 January (Australia Day).

Consular dialogue between the two governments

According to the MEA brief of June 2026, the first Consular Dialogue between India and Australia was held in New Delhi on 23 September 2025. The brief describes it as an upgradation of the earlier Joint Working Group on Visas, Passports, and Consular Matters.

Mobility arrangements

The brief records three arrangements that concern the movement of people between the two countries:

  • Migration and Mobility Partnership Arrangement (MMPA). Signed during the Indian Prime Minister's visit to Australia in May 2023.
  • MATES (Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early Professionals Scheme). Operational since November 2024.
  • Work and Holiday Visa Program. Established under the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), and operational since September 2024.

The brief does not set out the eligibility conditions, quotas, fees or application procedures for these schemes, or for any other Australian visa. Applicants should check current requirements with the High Commission for Australia or its official website before applying.

Australian university campuses in India

The brief lists Australian universities that have opened, or been approved to open, campuses in India. Deakin University and the University of Wollongong became the first foreign universities to open campuses in India, at GIFT City. In the months before the brief, the following received approvals to open campuses and were handed Letters of Intent (LoIs):

  • University of Western Australia (Mumbai and Chennai)
  • Western Sydney University (Greater Noida)
  • Victoria University (Noida)
  • La Trobe University (Bengaluru)

The LoI for the University of New South Wales was announced at the 3rd meeting of the Australia-India Education and Skills Council in December 2025. Students should confirm admission and course details with the universities themselves.

Social security

India and Australia signed a Social Security Agreement on the eve of the Indian Prime Minister's visit to Australia in November 2014. The Agreement has been ratified by both countries and came into force with effect from 1 January 2016. People who have worked in both countries and have questions about how it applies to them should seek guidance from the relevant official authorities.

The Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) and the Extradition Treaty between India and Australia were signed in June 2008. Both have been ratified by the two Governments and entered into force on 20 January 2011.

Honorary consuls and confirming requirements

Australia is represented in India by its High Commission in New Delhi and by its consulates; the register lists no honorary consuls. Where a country appoints honorary consuls, they have limited powers and do not provide the full range of services of a High Commission. Visa, document and other requirements should always be confirmed directly with the High Commission for Australia.
