This article outlines diplomatic relations between India and Afghanistan as described in the MEA brief of July 2026: how the brief characterises the relationship, India's engagement since the political developments of August 2021, India's diplomatic presence in Afghanistan, and ministerial visits from Afghanistan to India. The brief is short, and this article covers only what it states.
How the brief describes the relationship
According to the MEA brief of July 2026, India is one of Afghanistan's closest neighbours, sharing a contiguous border and a relationship that spans millennia. The brief states that the two countries are bound by deep civilisational ties and by a shared history through ancient and medieval times.
The brief also states that Afghanistan occupies a special place in India's Neighbourhood First policy. It describes the strong people-to-people connection between the citizens of both countries as the bedrock of the relationship and the foundation for a comprehensive partnership.
Engagement since August 2021
The brief states that India has traditionally enjoyed warm and friendly relations with all governments that have been in power in Afghanistan. Following the political developments of August 2021, India adopted what the brief calls a pragmatic approach to its engagement with the Afghan government.
According to the brief, this approach has enabled India to continue extending humanitarian assistance and supporting the developmental needs of the Afghan people. The assistance itself is described in the development and cooperation article of this guide.
India's diplomatic presence in Afghanistan
India resumed its presence in Afghanistan through the establishment of the Technical Mission of India in June 2022. On 21 October 2025, the Technical Mission was upgraded to the Embassy of India.
